It’s my pleasure to have you and your Collocophobia — the fear of organising things — here, Fiona!
I like to think I’m an organized person. People certainly tell me that I am, although the way it’s often said to me never actually sounds like a compliment…but I digress. If you want a job done, I’m your girl. I can prioritize, I can delegate, I keep an exceptional calendar/diary for the family, I’m great to have around in a crisis—cool & calm that’s me— but ask me to make a decision on where to file something or where to put something away that isn’t an everyday household item and I’m like, “OMG, I have no clue where to put it” so I just don’t.
Why? I don’t know. I’m clean but I’m not ‘papers’ tidy. Perhaps it stems from being the kid of expats and having help in the house until I was age eight? No idea. Perhaps I was just born untidy or lazy? Perhaps the “putting away fear” stems from childhood although my mother never punished me for that; she just left all my clothes on the end of the bed and I left them there for the whole week until I’d worn them all again. HAH! That bit of psychology didn’t work, Mum!
Hmm, maybe it isn’t just a fear of not putting away things that don’t have an official home. I am also slow to unpack a suitcase and with the exception of hauling out the dirty washing the moment I get home…see, I am clean…I find that final, total emptying of the case to be daunting.
But back to filing, although I am sure both things are related; my desk pretty much says it all! One of the things that freaks me out about filing is recall. (By the way it took me an hour to find this picture of my desk, because for some unfathomable reason, I had saved it not on my computer or on my backup USB or Dropbox but on Picassa!!!!!
I am always stressed by the question, “What do I file it under so I remember how to find it?” I am still missing important documents I KNOW I filed. “You need a system,” I hear you say. Yeah, well, I kinda tried that and again, recall was the issue. So I have folders filled with “things to file” and that has become my system. If I don’t file it, I have a chance of re-finding it, although granted it isn’t quick. Cue picture of Fiona going through the receipt shoebox and her undies drawer for really special receipts!
Can anyone out there relate? Any one got any insight as to why we do this? Am open to tips to change but the system has to be really simple and guarantee recall!
