Thirty-one Days of Halloweenie Day 23: Jennifer St George, Fear Lover

SandrabookspunkinbudAh, Halloween! Goblins! Haunted Houses! Witches! One’s husband leaping out of a perfectly good plane! These are all perfect examples of fear. As you know I adore writing about fear, especially the brain-scrambling, messy, heart-in-your-throat fear of LOVE. Hello Driving in Neutral, For Your Eyes Only and A Basic Renovation, my love-is-so-scary smartassed romcoms, which, you can get here.

Jennifer St George writes about scary things, like Halloween, commitment, and abandonment, and yep, you guess it, LOVE.

I have to admit I’m not a big fan of Halloween. I’m enough of a scaredy cat without having a whole day dedicated to all things spine-chilling.JenStG

What am I scared of? It might be simpler to write a list of things I’m not scared of. My top three fears are flying, snakes and sharks (I probably should have participated in your phobia series, Sandra or simply booked an appointment with Dr Shrinkee).

My husband is always trying to convince me these are irrational fears but that’s just rubbish. Recent aviation events are evidence that my fear of flying is…rational. The slithering things in my backyard (some which can kill you in a matter of minutes) proves my snake phobia is…rational. And the fact that a three metre white pointer shark just killed a man at the swimming beach next to our house…again, I’m completely rational.

Having all these fears makes me perfectly qualified to write romance novels as most of my characters are plagued with some fear or other. Of course not all my character’s fears are as obvious as flying, snakes or sharks. In my latest release, Tempted by the Billionaire Tycoon, my TemptedBy_2b[2]heroine Poppy has a deep-seated fear of being left. Consequently she never allows herself to get close to anyone. When she does find herself falling for the hero, she does a runner. You can’t be left if you leave first.

I suppose I should embrace Halloween. Try to make fun of my (perfectly rational) fears. My daughter does. She’s terrified of the dark, so this year she is going as ‘darkness’ (which makes costuming very simple – black sheet, here I come). Yup, she’s facing her fear. Trust a child under ten to teach me a valuable lesson.

Happy Halloween!

  1. My boys and I love Halloween – I love helping them dress up as something scary and my younger one always allows me to go to town on him with the make-up. So much fun! And I have to admit I’ve jumped out of a plane and done other dumb things. But I do share your fear of sharks, Jen – so I’m with you there! Great blog, thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to read your new book.
