Cookies + Coffee = 44 Days of Holiday Cookies Day 28: Smartass Baddass Clove and Lemon Cookies

clovesI write romance novels from grown ups and smartasses, so trust me when I say today’s cookie is a grown up smart assed cookie. This is all because of the cloves.

Cloves are a very grown up taste. Cloces make this cookie smartass and also BADASS. These are badass cookies. Badass because they are grown up, smartassed and cloves are like the most basassed spice EVER. Why are are cloves badass? Cloves are a natural analgesic.

Did you ever see the movie or read William Goldman’s (Goldman also wrote The Princess Bride, Kids, which is a totally smartass, badass story.) tale The Marathon Man? In the movie, Dustin Hoffman relies on oil of clove after he has some, uh, pain after some, uh, dental work. He’s trying to track down the man who murdered his brother and stole diamonds. Dustin gets tortured for it, dentally, but thanks to that oil of clove, he  keeps on running. Totally badass.

On top of that, cloves are a natural mould killer (or mold killer if you prefer). AND cloves taste good. Like really good. If your breath stinks, suck on a clove. Voila, No more stinky breath!  Also, cloves smell like…. Christmas! cloveball

Oven to 350F/170C

  •  ¾ cup butter, softened                                    2 cups flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar                                    ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 egg                                                             1/8 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp lemon extract                                       1/4 tsp grated lemon peel
  •  Glaze: 1 ½ cups confectioner’s (icing) sugar             2 Tbsp) water
  • ¼ tsp lemon extract.

Mix flour, cloves and salt in medium bowl. Set aside. Cream butter and granulated sugar in large bowl until light and fluffy.

Add egg and lemon extract; beat until well blended.

Gradually beat in flour mixture until well mixed.

Divide dough in half. Form each half into a log about 1 ½ inches in diameter by 9 inches long. Wrap in wax paper. Refrigerate 1 hour.

Cut dough into quarter inch thick slices. Place on ungreased baking sheets.

Bake 12 – 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

Cool on baking sheets 1 minute. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Lemon Glaze, mix confectioners’ sugar, water and lemon extract in small bowl until well blended. Drizzle over cooled cookies. Let stand until glaze is set.

Serve this grown up smartass badass babies with a Medium roasted coffee.
